Yellow weather warning issued for Devon as heavy rain and flooding expected
Report by Duncan Williams for Pulman's Weekly News
Devon residents are being urged to prepare for more wet weather this week, as the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain across the county. The alert comes into effect at 6.00am tomorrow and will remain in place until 8.00am on Thursday, 19th February.
Forecasters predict that 10-20mm of rain could fall widely across Devon, with some areas near the south coast seeing higher amounts.
Drivers are being warned that spray and flooding on roads could lead to longer journey times, while bus and train services may also be disrupted.
“Strong east to northeasterly winds will accompany the rain and snow, which could exacerbate impacts in places,” a Met Office spokesperson said. “Large waves could affect some east-facing coasts, especially along the English Channel.”
The warning also highlights the possibility of flooding affecting a few homes and businesses, as well as potential interruptions to power supplies.
The Met Office has offered advice for residents to stay safe during the period of heavy rain:
Check whether your property could be at risk of flooding and consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
If travelling, check road conditions and public transport timetables, and allow extra time for your journey.
Prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs and other essential items.
Yellow warnings are issued when the weather is expected to cause some low-level impacts, including travel disruption and minor flooding in certain areas.
Residents are advised to stay informed and take precautions where necessary, as Devon braces for a wet and windy midweek.
