Nominate Somerset’s unsung heroes: Community Resilience Awards 2025 now open
Report by Kelly Leonard for Pulman's Weekly News
Do you know someone who goes the extra mile when times get tough? A neighbour who checks in during power cuts, or a local group that helps protect homes from flooding? The Somerset Prepared partnership is now seeking nominations for this year’s Community Resilience Awards, offering a chance to shine a light on the people and organisations quietly making a big difference in our communities.
Launched on 11th May to coincide with Somerset Day, the awards recognise individuals and groups who have shown exceptional dedication in helping their communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. These are the people who often work behind the scenes, taking practical action and showing leadership and care when it matters most.
Nominations are open for two categories. The Individual Award honours someone who has made a significant personal contribution to community resilience. The Group Award is for a community organisation that has demonstrated outstanding planning, preparation or support during local emergencies.
Winners will be announced during the Annual Somerset Prepared Community Resilience Day, taking place at Taunton Racecourse on Thursday 15th October. The awards will be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq.
As well as public recognition, winners will receive vouchers to use for community activities. The Resilience Day itself is a free event open to all, offering a full programme of workshops, presentations and equipment demonstrations. It's a celebration of local strength, resourcefulness and cooperation, and a valuable opportunity to learn more about how we can all be better prepared for the unexpected.
Last year’s winners included Lucie Reader of Pitcombe (pictured below), recognised for her leadership in helping to ensure all homes in her village were flood-protected, and Nunney Parish Council, whose members worked closely with residents to improve their resilience to future flood risks. Their stories are a powerful reminder of how individual effort and community spirit can make a real and lasting impact.
Dr Bel Deering, Community Engagement Officer for Somerset Rivers Authority, said: "The incredible work of volunteers who help their communities before and during emergencies deserves our gratitude. They are our local heroes, and their courage and compassion deserve to be celebrated and shared as stories of hope for all of Somerset.”
Emma Giffard, Flood Resilience Engagement Advisor for the Environment Agency, added: “On behalf of all the Somerset Prepared partners, we extend our sincere thanks and warmly encourage both groups and individuals to submit their nominations for the awards.”
Nominations are open until 15th September. To find out more or submit a nomination, visit www.somersetprepared.org.uk/somerset-community-resilience-awards
