Jacob’s Ladder Steps closed after public safety inspection
Report by Duncan Williams for Pulman's Weekly News
A well-known East Devon landmark has been closed indefinitely following concerns raised during a recent structural inspection.
The Jacob’s Ladder Steps in Sidmouth, a Grade II-listed structure linking the seafront with the Connaught Gardens area, are currently closed while specialist advice is sought on how best to carry out repairs. The steps are owned and maintained by East Devon District Council, which says the decision has been taken in the interests of public safety.
Council officers have confirmed that the inspection identified the need for specialist work to ensure both the long-term structural stability of the steps and the protection of their historic character. As a listed structure, any repair work must meet strict conservation standards.
In a statement, the council described Jacob’s Ladder as a “valued local landmark” and an important pedestrian route used daily by residents and visitors alike. It said a careful and considered approach was being adopted to make sure repairs are carried out correctly rather than quickly.
Posting on social media, the council said it is working closely with structural timber specialists and its own Conservation Team “to review the inspection findings in detail, confirm the most suitable repair method, and make sure any works are undertaken to the correct standard”.
The authority added that ensuring the work is “undertaken to the correct standard” is essential before the steps can safely reopen.
Residents have been thanked for their patience, with the council confirming that further updates will be shared as soon as more information becomes available. No timescale has yet been given for when the steps might reopen.
