Honiton Running Club continues to go from strength to strength, with recent standout performances at both the Ottery 10k and the Exe to Axe Relays, showcasing the club’s vibrant spirit and growing presence in the local running community.
The Ottery 10k, held on Sunday 11th May, proved to be a resounding success. Organised by Honiton Running Club, the event sold out, welcoming 304 runners to the start line.
Among them was none other than Olympic medallist Jo Pavey, who not only officially started the race but also took part herself, delighting fellow runners by engaging warmly with participants along the way.
Billed as a fast, flat course, the route drew some good-natured debate among competitors regarding its 'flat' credentials. With warm weather conditions adding to the challenge, it was Richard Hardy of Axe Valley Runners who claimed the overall win in a time of 34:32.
Honiton Running Club proudly fielded 24 runners, with numerous other members volunteering to support the smooth running of the event. Adrian Lane led the club home, finishing in 38:38 and placing 12th overall. Katie Davey was the club’s first female finisher, clocking 48:24 to win her senior female age category and secure 63rd place overall as the sixth woman across the line.
The event was particularly significant for participants of the club’s 5k to 10k training course, led by club chair Paula Ferris.
The Ottery 10k served as the culmination of their training, with many successfully completing their first 10k race - an achievement that drew heartfelt cheers from spectators and fellow runners alike.
Other notable performances came from Jay Sweetman (45:34), Tim Pepper (47:06), and Emma Davey (49:12), underscoring the club’s depth of talent and camaraderie.
Honiton’s success didn’t end there. Just days later, on Friday 16th May, the club also competed in the City Runs’ Exe to Axe Relays. The popular event drew 99 teams to Exwick for a scenic four-leg relay race along the River Exe.
Honiton Running Club once again made a strong impression, entering six teams composed of members across various age groups and abilities.
The first Honiton team to finish - Mike Mears, Pete Nichols, Kevin Hawker, and Adrian Lane - completed the course in a combined time of 1:00:20, placing 25th overall.
One local running enthusiast and spectator at the event commented, “With a growing membership and successful events, Honiton Running Club is clearly hitting its stride.”
