Report by Duncan Williams for Pulman's Weekly News
Great Western Railway (GWR) has officially announced its Customer and Community Improvement Fund (CCIF) for 2025, encouraging individuals, community groups, and organisations to propose projects that aim to strengthen and enrich their local areas.
This year, the initiative carries added significance as it coincides with the railway's 200th anniversary. As such, GWR is seeking projects that not only enhance communities but also reflect the historical bond between the railway and its customers.
The company is particularly interested in proposals that focus on key themes such as diversity, youth engagement, and career opportunities within the rail and travel industries.
Highlighting the importance of the fund, Emma Morris, GWRβs Senior Community Impact Manager, said, βOur Customer and Community Improvement Fund is a fantastic opportunity for us to invest locally in projects that have a positive impact for our customers and our communities, especially as we celebrate 200 years of the railway.β
Emma Roberts, Programme Manager for Railway 200, added, βThrough GWRβs anniversary-related fund, and a wide variety of activities and events throughout the year, we hope it will also have a positive impact on communities, offering opportunities for all.β
The fund has already supported a range of inspiring projects across the region, showcasing its versatility and community-focused approach. Previous initiatives include promoting bee-friendly flowers and plants, which contribute to environmental sustainability, and organising community clean-ups that help revitalise shared spaces. These examples demonstrate the fund's ability to address both environmental and social challenges while fostering stronger connections between communities and the railway.
Applications for the Customer and Community Improvement Fund must be submitted by 23:59 on 31st January 2025. GWR invites organisations and individuals to think creatively about how the railway can contribute to their local areas, be it through education, environmental projects, or cultural initiatives.
The fund is part of GWRβs broader commitment to community engagement and aligns with the year-long programme of activities celebrating 200 years of the railway. These events and initiatives are designed to not only commemorate the past but also inspire the next generation to engage with and benefit from the railway.
