Report by Duncan Williams for Pulman's Weekly News
Colyton Grammar School in East Devon has announced a record number of offers for places at Oxford and Cambridge universities for its Year 13 students in 2025.
A total of 34 students have received offers, with 15 accepted by Oxford and 19 by Cambridge, representing an impressive 24% of the Year 13 cohort.
The school’s success is not limited to Oxbridge offers; many other students have also secured placements at prestigious conservatoires, medical schools, and international institutions.
The subjects covered in these offers are diverse, including Architecture, Biochemistry, Computer Science, English, Engineering, Geography, History, Maths, Medicine, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Natural Sciences, Philosophy, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and Psychology.
Headteacher Tim Harris expressed his pride in the students' achievements, stating, “We are thrilled that Colyton students have achieved such fantastic offers, rewarding their hard work and the efforts of my dedicated colleagues.
“At Colyton, our core purpose is to enable all students to flourish at elite higher education institutions, regardless of background. We are delighted to see this reflected in the recognition from the Fairer Schools Index and the record offers for Oxbridge places this year.”
In January, Colyton Grammar School was ranked as the top school in Devon and the highest-ranked selective school in the country according to the University of Bristol’s 'Fairer Schools Index'. This index evaluates school performance in relation to their socio-economic context, highlighting the school’s commitment to academic excellence.
Recognised as “Outstanding” in all areas by Ofsted, Colyton has also earned praise from the 'Good Schools’ Guide', which has described it as: “A calm and inspiring haven of education where children feel proud to be bright, are challenged academically and are encouraged to be their very best within their community.”
Colyton Grammar School is dedicated to supporting high-achieving students from under-resourced backgrounds throughout the South West. The establishment of the Colyton Foundation, a charity that collaborates with schools and leading universities, aims to ensure that higher education remains accessible to young people from all backgrounds.
