Devon’s NHS faces ‘staggering’ £255 million savings target amid growing concern

Serious concerns have been raised over plans for Devon’s health service to make what one local leader has described as “staggering” and “unprecedented” savings of £255 million.

The county’s NHS system has been under heavy pressure in recent years, operating under a form of special measures due to ongoing financial challenges. The proposed cost-cutting drive is part of a wider effort to stabilise budgets but has prompted warnings from senior county officials about its likely impact on services and partnerships.

Donna Manson, the chief executive of Devon County Council, said she had “real concerns” about the scale of the proposed reductions.

“What’s not outlined in the NHS report is the fact this is a huge cut in personnel and leadership, and I have real concerns,” she said. “The reality is there are going to be fewer people for us to engage with, and getting Devon’s voice across will be more challenging.”
