Devastating barn fire near Crewkerne leaves building completely destroyed
Report by Duncan Williams for Pulman's Weekly News
A large barn near Crewkerne was left in ruins after a fierce fire tore through the agricultural structure in the early hours of Sunday, 5th May.
Fire crews from across South Somerset and East Devon responded swiftly to the blaze in Hinton St George. Units from Ilminster, Martock, Crewkerne, Chard and Yeovil were among those dispatched by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, with a total of four fire engines and a water carrier tackling the fully developed fire.
The barn, which housed vital tools and machinery, was reported to be “completely destroyed” despite the concerted efforts of firefighters.
A local telehandler was deployed on site to help move equipment away from the flames and prevent further damage to nearby property.
Axminster Fire Station later provided relief to initial crews, continuing work into 6th May to turn over smouldering debris and cool remaining hotspots before declaring the incident closed.
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Despite the best efforts from the crews, unfortunately the building was completely destroyed by the fire.”
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and remains under investigation.
There have been no reported injuries, though the incident is a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of rural infrastructure to fire, particularly with essential farming equipment and materials stored on site.
