Controversial convenience store to open in listed building

Ilminster is set to welcome a new addition to its town centre next week, as a newly refurbished Premier-branded convenience store and off-licence prepares to open its doors on Monday, 9th June, from 7.00am onwards.
The shop, located in the Grade II listed building that formerly housed Retail Therapy, has undergone significant renovation over the past month. Shelves are already being stocked in preparation for the official opening.
This marks the arrival of the nationally recognised Premier brand in Ilminster. Established in 1994, Premier now operates over 3,000 stores across the UK and is known for providing a range of branded and own-brand items, including Euro Shopper and Jack’s products. The brand is part of the Booker Group, which has been owned by Tesco since 2018.
While many residents have expressed enthusiasm for the added convenience, the store’s opening has not been without controversy. Earlier this year, a planning application was submitted for a large, externally illuminated fascia sign. This drew objections from Ilminster Town Council and concern from Somerset Council’s Conservation Officer, given the historic nature of the building (pictured here prior to the Premier takeover).
In response, revised plans featuring a more subtle swan-neck lighting design were submitted at the end of April. Although the new signage has yet to be installed, the store’s opening will proceed as planned.
The proposed change of use for the historic property first came to light in early May and has prompted a mixed response from the South Somerset community. While some welcome the accessibility and choice it promises, others have raised concerns about the impact on the town’s heritage and visual character.
Alongside its convenience offering, the store will also serve as an off-licence, following the successful application for an alcohol licence in January.
With just days to go until the opening, all eyes will be on how the new Premier store integrates into Ilminster’s high street - and how it may influence the historic town’s evolving retail landscape.
