Visitors to Devon and Somerset are being urged to use water responsibly this summer as continued hot weather places increasing pressure on local supplies and the environment.

The Environment Agency (EA) has moved Devon into a “prolonged dry weather” status following the warmest spring on record and a series of heatwaves, with low river levels and increasingly dry conditions affecting the natural environment.

A hosepipe ban is already in place in Devon after periods of extreme heat led to “exceptionally high demand” for water.

The Environment Agency has warned that further drought measures cannot be ruled out, while the Consumer Council for Water (CCW) has called on visitors, as well as local residents, to help reduce unnecessary water use.

Joanne Laeger, the Environment Agency’s environment planning and engagement manager, told local democracy reporters and the BBC that everyone, including holidaymakers visiting the South West, needed to “be prepared” for the continued dry and warm weather.

“Water companies are responsible for managing public water supply and that’s from supplying water as well as trying to manage the demand for water,” she said.

“They will be trying to reach out to holidaymakers and visitors to try to make sure that people use water as wisely as possible when they’re visiting our lovely area.”

The appeal comes during one of the busiest periods of the year for tourism in the South West, when thousands of visitors arrive and place additional demand on water resources.

Cath Jones, the Consumer Council for Water’s head of engagement, said it was “absolutely vital” that holidaymakers avoided overusing supplies.

“This is not a one-person or just a residents issue, it is so important that people visiting the area understand,” she said.

“We want them to take shorter showers, not a bath, we do not want to see people refilling at hot tubs every weekend because there’s new people coming to a property.

“We cannot have people watering lawns just to make them look green for a tourist - that is absolutely things that we must stop.”

The warning follows weeks of unusually dry conditions across the South West, with concerns that continued warm weather could increase pressure on rivers, reservoirs and wildlife habitats.

Some residents have already been taking steps to conserve water, including reducing car washing, drinking fewer cups of tea and avoiding unnecessary toilet flushing.

The Environment Agency said water companies were continuing to monitor supplies and manage demand, but urged everyone, including visitors, to play their part in protecting water resources during the summer months.

Families across South Somerset are being invited to take advantage of a wide range of free activities and support services during the school summer holidays, as Chard Community Hub expands its programme for children and young people.

The Hub has developed an extensive timetable of events designed to help ease some of the pressures that the school holidays can place on families, while ensuring children of all ages have access to fun, educational and supportive activities.

The summer programme has been organised by the Hub’s Early Years Lead, Megan Parfoot, in partnership with a number of local organisations, including Young Somerset, Gillingham Grange Care Home, Great Mead, Holyrood Academy, the NHS and Reach.

Activities are available for children and young people of all ages. Families with babies and toddlers can attend Healthy Little Ones sessions with the Health Visiting Team, while young children also have the opportunity to enjoy shared reading sessions with residents at Gillingham Grange Care Home.

Other activities include holiday play sessions, arts and crafts, cinema-style experiences and youth sessions, while teenagers can also access relationship and sexual health advice through bookable appointments at the Youth Hub.

“Our aim is to provide a safe space for families to meet and spend time with people from their local area,” said Megan Parfoot. “All of our sessions are free, so please do drop in.”

The Hub is also continuing its popular pre-loved school uniform scheme throughout the summer on a ‘pay what you can’ basis, helping families prepare for the new school term without placing additional strain on household budgets.

Samples of Holyrood Academy uniform are also available for young people to try on before ordering the correct sizes.

Alongside the holiday activities, Chard Community Hub continues to provide year-round support through its Community Fridge, Pantry Scheme, RSPCA pet food bank, baby bank, social wellbeing groups and signposting services, helping to keep local families happy, healthy and well supported.

A man accused of murdering former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe has appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where prosecutors alleged he struck her 21 times with a hammer before stealing her wallet.

Joshua Kerry, 28, of Byrley Road, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, is charged with murdering the 78-year-old at her remote bungalow in Haytor, on Dartmoor, Devon, on 8th July.

The court heard that Kerry allegedly arrived at the property shortly after midday in a red Vauxhall Corsa, with a doorbell camera said to have captured his arrival.

Prosecutor Kashif Malik told the court that interior CCTV showed Ms Widdecombe sitting in her kitchen eating lunch before the defendant entered through the front door and allegedly asked: “Don’t suppose you have bank cards and ID?”

The prosecution alleges Kerry then walked into the kitchen and struck Ms Widdecombe 21 times on the head with a hammer before tipping her from her chair onto the floor. It is further alleged that he took a wallet from her handbag before leaving the property, having been inside for only around two minutes.

A provisional post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a “blunt force injury to the head”, the court heard.

Ms Widdecombe was discovered the following day lying face down on her kitchen floor by her gardener after concerns were raised when she failed to attend a scheduled television interview. The production team reportedly contacted her personal assistant, who asked the gardener to check on her welfare.

The court also heard that police recovered a hammer and a pair of black gloves from bins outside Kerry’s home. Prosecutors said Ms Widdecombe’s DNA was found on the gloves.

Kerry, who was arrested at his home in Rotherham on 11th July, appeared wearing a grey prison-issue tracksuit. During the brief hearing he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring told the defendant: “You’re charged with an offence of murder which can only be dealt with in a crown court.”

He added: “You are therefore remanded into custody and sent to crown court.”

Kerry was remanded in custody and appeared later on Tuesday at the Old Bailey.

Counter Terrorism Policing continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Although Kerry has also been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, he has not been charged with any terrorism offence.

Announcing the murder charge on Monday, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing Laurence Taylor said investigators were continuing to examine the suspect’s motives.

“I want to make it very clear that our investigation into this individual, determining his motivations and any wider activity he may have been involved in is continuing,” he said.

“Given Ann Widdecombe’s profile and the targeted nature of the attack, determining the motivation, including any possible political motivation, remains an active avenue of investigation for our detectives. And as with all murder investigations, understanding the why is a key part of our inquiries.”

An East Devon man has admitted defrauding a vulnerable 80-year-old woman out of almost £90,000 after falsely claiming work was needed at her home and persuading her to write him cheques.

Robert Fordham, 54, of Lyme Road in Axminster, pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud by false representation at a recent court hearing. The offences took place between December 2023 and November 2024.

The case was brought before the courts under the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Criminal Justice Court Reporting Scheme.

Prosecutor Warjinder Baines told the court the victim, who has severely impaired eyesight and other vulnerabilities, was initially introduced to Fordham by her social worker to carry out landscaping work at her property.

Fordham was paid by cheque for the agreed work. However, the court heard that he later returned to the woman’s home when her social worker was not present, falsely claiming that further work was required.

On a number of occasions, the pensioner either wrote Fordham cheques herself or he completed them on her behalf. He also returned claiming that some of the cheques had bounced, persuading her to make further payments.

The fraud continued until November 2024, when the woman’s social worker uncovered the deception.

In total, Fordham admitted fraudulently obtaining £89,523 from the victim.

The court also heard that Fordham has previous convictions dating back more than a decade, including offences of theft and deception.

District Judge Smith committed the case to Exeter Crown Court for sentencing. Fordham is due to appear before the court on 29th July and was granted unconditional bail.

Steam trainspotting, real ale and live entertainment will take centre stage over the August Bank Holiday as the South Devon Railway teams up once again with the Staverton Beer Festival for its popular Summer Rails & Ales event.

The four-day event, running from Friday, 28th August to Monday, 31st August, offers visitors the chance to travel by heritage steam railway through the Dart Valley before enjoying one of Devon’s best-known village beer festivals.

Special train services will operate between Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside throughout the weekend, stopping at Staverton, where festival-goers can enjoy a wide selection of real ales, craft beers and ciders served by the Devon Diesel Society’s award-winning bar.

Alongside the drinks, the festival will feature hot and cold food, teas, coffees and soft drinks, as well as live music across the weekend and additional entertainment on the Sunday evening.

Organisers are encouraging people to leave the car at home, with free parking available at Buckfastleigh, a bus stop next to Totnes Riverside station and Totnes mainline railway station within walking distance of the heritage line.

The South Devon Railway, which follows the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, is one of the county’s best-known heritage attractions, offering visitors a journey through ancient woodland, rolling countryside and riverside scenery.

Families across Devon are being invited to enjoy a unique theatre experience this summer as an award-winning bilingual production tours seven libraries across the county.

The Librarians will visit libraries between 28th and 31st July, combining British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English to create an inclusive performance for Deaf and hearing children aged between four and nine, along with their families.

Supported by Arts Council England as part of the National Year of Reading, the show has been created by touring theatre company HelenandJohn with performer Alex Nowak.

The story follows the adventures of the eccentric Miss Book and Mr Page, using visual theatre, physical comedy and storytelling to celebrate books, imagination and the enjoyment of reading.

Fire crews from across Somerset were called to a fast-spreading blaze near Ilminster after a large area of trees, hedgerow and grassland caught fire during the hot, dry weather.

Firefighters from Chard, Martock, Yeovil and Taunton were mobilised to Winterhay Lane after reports of a significant fire in the open.

The blaze prompted a major emergency response, with firefighters from four stations working together to bring the fire under control before damping down the area to prevent it reigniting.

A spokesperson for Chard Fire Station said: “Earlier today, Chard’s appliance was mobilised alongside crews from Martock Fire Station, Yeovil Fire Station and Taunton Fire Station to reports of a large fire in the open in the Winterhay Lane area.

“On arrival, crews found a significant area of conifer trees, hedgerow, grassland and an electricity pylon well alight, which was spreading rapidly due to the dry conditions.

“Thanks to the hard work and swift action of all crews involved, the fire was successfully extinguished, and the area damped down to prevent any reignition.”

Firefighters tackled the blaze using three hose reel jets, a 51mm jet, six sets of breathing apparatus, beaters and thermal imaging cameras.

An additional water carrier from Bridgwater Fire Station was also sent to the scene to help maintain water supplies at what firefighters described as a challenging location.

Following the incident, the fire service urged people to take extra care during the current spell of warm, dry weather.

The spokesperson said: “Fires in the open can start easily and spread incredibly fast.

“Please remember to dispose of cigarettes responsibly, avoid using disposable BBQs in wild areas, and always ensure any bonfires are fully supervised and completely extinguished.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed.

Counter-terrorism police have taken over the investigation into the murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe after detectives uncovered what they described as “new information and evidence”.

The 78-year-old was found dead at her home in Haytor, on Dartmoor, on Thursday morning after suffering serious injuries.

Devon and Cornwall Police launched a murder investigation on Friday and, on Saturday, arrested a 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on suspicion of murder.

On Monday, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) announced the man had been re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, said the decision followed developments during what had been “a dynamic and complex investigation”.

He said: “We are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack.”

Mr Taylor added: “Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police.”

Counter Terrorism Policing South East said new information had “come to light during what has been a dynamic and complex investigation”, leading officers to assume responsibility for the inquiry from Devon and Cornwall Police.

The announcement marks a significant change in the investigation. On Sunday, Devon and Cornwall Police had said there was “nothing to suggest” the killing was politically motivated, although officers stressed they remained “open-minded” about the motive and did not believe there was any wider threat to the public.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed she had spoken with the head of counter-terrorism policing and said the specialist unit was now leading the investigation into what she described as “the horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe”.

She said she would update the House of Commons later on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister urged the public not to speculate about the case while the investigation continues, adding that it was important to protect the integrity of the inquiry.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle paid tribute to the former Conservative minister.

He said: “Ann was a formidable politician, a prominent figure in public life.”

Describing her as someone who “was fierce and enjoyed robust political debate”, Sir Lindsay added that she “was true to her beliefs”.

Reflecting on their friendship despite political differences, he told MPs: “I spent a lot of time in the evening sharing a pizza with the one and only Ann Widdecombe.”

He said she “was a friend in many ways” and urged MPs to be careful in their public comments to avoid causing “prejudice in a future trial”.

The investigation has already prompted extensive forensic work in both Devon and South Yorkshire.

CCTV footage, first reported by The Sun, appears to show the suspect leaving a property in Rotherham shortly before 8am on Wednesday and getting into a red car with what appears to be a long object protruding from his shorts pocket. Police have not commented on the footage.

Officers later searched a property in Rotherham believed to be linked to the investigation, while neighbours described armed police entering the address before making an arrest. One resident told the BBC: “I was making some food in the kitchen and looked out the window, there was loads of banging, and there was armed police in the pathway and they just went into the house and pulled [the suspect] out.”

Another neighbour said police removed a red car from the property.

Police believe Ms Widdecombe was attacked at around 12.30pm on Wednesday 8th July. Her body was discovered at her home the following morning.

The distance between Haytor and Rotherham is approximately 270 miles, with the journey by road taking around four-and-a-half hours.

Detectives say they have now received more than 120 pieces of information from members of the public following an appeal.

A heightened police presence will remain in the Haytor area while enquiries continue.

Anyone with information, images or video footage that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via the Major Incident Public Portal or by calling 101.

Devon County Council is considering a major change in policy that could pave the way for 5G equipment to be installed on council-owned lampposts, bridges and other infrastructure – potentially generating hundreds of pounds in annual income for every installation while improving mobile coverage across the county.

Councillors will debate the proposals at the authority’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 15th July. If approved, the policy would allow mobile network operators to install so-called “small cell” 5G equipment on council-owned assets, with officers estimating each lamppost could generate between £300 and £350 a year.

The report also suggests larger installations on council-owned buildings or bridges could bring in significantly higher returns, with annual income estimated at between £1,750 and £7,000 per site.

The proposals come as Devon continues to struggle with some of the poorest 5G coverage in England. Figures published by Ofcom using Office for National Statistics data show North Devon, Torridge and West Devon rank among the three worst local authority areas in the country for 5G availability.

Coverage currently stands at just 45.2 per cent in North Devon, 46.7 per cent in Torridge and 63.3 per cent in West Devon, well below the national average of 96.1 per cent.

Poor mobile connectivity has long been a concern raised by Devon councillors, with the Cabinet report arguing that improved 5G infrastructure could boost the county’s economy by between £15 billion and £22 billion by 2035.

Devon County Council first considered the issue in 2019 but decided against allowing 5G equipment on structures such as lampposts because of concerns over potential health impacts.

However, the council’s public health team reviewed the latest scientific evidence earlier this year. While acknowledging that further research into long-term effects is still needed, the review concluded that current evidence does not indicate any adverse health effects from low-level radiofrequency fields generated by 5G equipment operating within internationally recognised safety limits.

The report states: “The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have carried out an extensive programme of research, assessing exposures from 5G base stations as the technology has rolled out in the UK and this is summarised in the guidance, updated most recently in July 2025.

“The results confirm UKHSA’s existing advice that exposure to radio waves from 5G base stations is well below the guidelines set by the ICNIRP and as such reported there should be no consequences for public health.”

Although Devon County Council is not the planning authority, current regulations allow it to approve certain permitted developments on assets it owns.

The report warns that maintaining the council’s existing policy could become increasingly difficult as legislation surrounding digital connectivity continues to evolve.

“The planning and legal framework has shifted such that the Council could receive challenges from mobile network operators based on the current policy,” the report states.

It also highlights the economic cost of delaying improved digital infrastructure, adding: “The delay in the implementation of 5G in Devon compared to other parts of the southwest and nationally, presents an opportunity cost to our local economy and delivery of public services, particularly in rural areas where improved mobile coverage could be a more cost-effective or interim digital connectivity solutions for areas without fixed wireless or fibre broadband.”

The report continues: “Enabling Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to use council-owned assets, such as street lighting columns and bridges and even potentially rural sites such as county farms [owned by Devon County Council], could encourage commercial investment in rolling out 5G.”

Cabinet members will consider the draft policy alongside alternative options, including retaining the current approach, when they meet next week.

A man arrested in connection with the murder investigation into the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe has been released without charge and is no longer being treated as a suspect.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed on Saturday morning that the 26-year-old, who had been arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday, has now been released from custody and is “no longer part of the investigation.”

Miss Widdecombe, 78, was discovered dead at her home near Haytor on Dartmoor after emergency services were called to the property at around 11.40am on Thursday, 9th July. Police said she had suffered serious injuries, prompting detectives from the Force Major Crime Investigation Team to launch a murder inquiry.

Although the arrest initially marked a significant development in the investigation, officers have since ruled the man out of their enquiries as they continue efforts to identify those responsible.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said the investigation remains active and is progressing rapidly.

ACC Longman said: “Our priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined.

“Detectives continue to carry out numerous enquiries as part of the ongoing investigation and we remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Officers were called to Miss Widdecombe’s home at Haytor by the ambulance service at around 11.40am on Thursday 9th July.

“Sadly, 78-year-old Miss Widdecombe was located deceased within the property. She had sustained serious injuries.

“Her next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

“Detectives from the Force Major Crime Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation and are conducting extensive enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Miss Widdecombe’s death.

“A cordon remains in place at the property while specialist officers continue forensic examinations. There are road closures in place around the scene.

“The public will see a significant police presence in the area while detectives and officers conduct house-to-house and CCTV enquiries.

“This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Miss Widdecombe at this difficult time.

“Our murder enquiry is in its early stages but moving at a significant pace. We are deploying all of the necessary resources to find out exactly what has happened.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have information about this incident, however insignificant it may seem, to come forward and speak with us.

“We will release further information when we are able to do so. In the meantime, I would ask people not to speculate about what might have happened, particularly on social media.

“This is not only potentially harmful to our investigation but also deeply distressing for family and friends of Miss Widdecombe. The family have also asked for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with what has happened.

“We have set up a Major Incident Public Portal for information, images or footage to be submitted to us. This can be found on our website.

“Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers.”

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe at her home near Haytor, as detectives continue a major investigation in one of Devon’s most high-profile criminal inquiries in recent years.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the suspect, a white British man, was arrested at an address in Newton Abbot on Friday afternoon. He remains in police custody while officers continue their enquiries.

Miss Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her rural home, Widdecombe’s Rest, after emergency services were called to the property at around 11.40am on Thursday, 9th July. Police said she had sustained serious injuries.

A murder investigation was launched shortly afterwards, with detectives from the Force Major Crime Investigation Team leading extensive enquiries.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said officers remain in the early stages of the investigation and are keeping an open mind about the circumstances surrounding the death.

He confirmed there is currently no information to suggest the incident was politically motivated and said, following consultation with counter-terrorism officers, it is not being treated as terrorism.

Police have not commented on whether the arrested man was known to Miss Widdecombe, saying it is too early to discuss that aspect of the investigation.

A large police cordon remains in place around the property on the eastern edge of Dartmoor while forensic specialists continue examinations.

Roads around Haytor Vale have been subject to closures, and residents can expect a significant police presence as officers carry out house-to-house enquiries and examine CCTV, doorbell camera and dashcam footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson described the death as “an extremely tragic incident” and appealed for anyone with information to contact investigators.

“We are deploying all of the necessary resources to establish exactly what happened,” she said. “We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the Haytor or Haytor Vale area and who may have witnessed anything unusual or captured footage that could assist our enquiries.”

She also urged the public to avoid speculation, particularly on social media, warning that rumours could hinder the investigation and add to the distress experienced by Miss Widdecombe’s family and friends.

Devon and Cornwall Police have established a Major Incident Public Portal where members of the public can upload photographs, video footage and other information directly to detectives. Information can also be provided by calling 101, quoting reference 50260179119 and Operation Hunlen, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Miss Widdecombe moved to Haytor in 2008 after leaving frontline politics, describing the property as the place where she intended to spend the rest of her life. She often spoke of her family’s Devon and Cornwall roots and her affection for Dartmoor, where she had visited since childhood.

Before retiring from Parliament, she represented Maidstone for 23 years as a Conservative MP and later served as a Member of the European Parliament before joining Reform UK as its immigration and justice spokesperson.

Her management team described the past 24 hours as “very traumatic and upsetting” and asked that the family’s privacy be respected while the police investigation continues.

The news has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the investigation as “shocking news” and urged anyone with relevant information to assist police. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said she was “stunned” by the “horrific” circumstances, while politicians including Angela Rayner, Ed Davey, Mel Stride and Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle also expressed condolences.

Former Strictly Come Dancing partner Anton Du Beke said he was “devastated” by the loss, remembering Miss Widdecombe as a loyal friend who embraced the programme with enthusiasm and humour.

Police say the investigation remains fast-moving and further updates will be released as enquiries progress.

A safety warning has been issued across Somerset and Devon after a sharp rise in fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters, with residents urged to take extra care when buying, charging and storing battery-powered transport.

New figures from the Fire Protection Association show there were a record 432 fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters across the UK in 2025. Many of these incidents involved lithium-ion batteries, which can fail suddenly and cause intense fires.

The growing risk has prompted Heart of the South West Trading Standards to issue an urgent warning to consumers.

Fakir Osman, assistant director of regulatory services for Heart of the South West Trading Standards, said: “Battery fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters are rising fast, and some have devastating consequences.

“If you are buying one, choose a reputable retailer.

“Make sure the bike, battery and charger meet UK safety standards.

“Cutting corners to save money could put lives at risk.”

The warning follows an increase in similar incidents reported by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in everyday items such as mobile phones and laptops, but if they fail they can ignite quickly, creating intense heat and dangerous smoke. Fire services have warned that these incidents pose a serious risk to people, homes and emergency responders.

Kate Saint, head of prevention at Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Fires involving lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and e-scooters can develop incredibly quickly, producing intense heat, toxic smoke and leaving people with very little time to escape.

“We’re seeing a significant increase in these incidents, and they are especially dangerous when bikes or scooters are stored or charged in hallways or near front doors, as a fire can quickly block the only escape route from a property.”

She urged owners to check their equipment regularly, use only the correct charger supplied for their device and avoid charging batteries near escape routes or overnight.

Businesses have also been reminded that privately owned e-scooters remain illegal to use on public roads and pavements unless they are part of a government-approved rental scheme.

Trading Standards said consumers should only buy e-bikes and e-scooters from trusted retailers, check that products carry UKCA or CE safety markings, avoid modified batteries and be cautious of unusually cheap deals.

Batteries should never be charged overnight or near building exits, and unwanted batteries should be disposed of safely.

Mr Osman added: “This is a growing risk, but it is preventable.”

Communities across the South West are being encouraged to take a fresh look at their relationship with alcohol as a national campaign highlights the everyday role drinking can play in people’s lives.

Alcohol Awareness Week 2026, running from 6th to 12th July, is inviting people to reflect on the theme “Alcohol and me” - encouraging honest conversations about drinking habits, the pressures people face and the support available.

Supported by public health teams across the region, including Public Health Devon and Somerset Council’s Public Health team, the campaign aims to remind residents that checking in with their alcohol intake is just as much a part of looking after their health as monitoring other aspects of wellbeing.

For many people, alcohol is closely linked with everyday experiences - from birthdays and barbecues to socialising with friends, watching sport or unwinding after a busy day. But campaign organisers say these connections can sometimes make it difficult to step back and consider whether drinking habits are having an impact.

The message behind Alcohol Awareness Week is not about judgement, but about awareness, choice and making sure people know where they can find help if they need it.

Nationally, around 10 million people regularly drink alcohol in ways that could harm their health and wellbeing.

Excessive drinking can contribute to a range of issues, including poor sleep, anxiety, low mood and longer-term health conditions such as heart disease, liver disease and some cancers.

Health professionals recommend that adults follow lower-risk drinking guidance, with men and women advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week, spread across three or more days.

Across Devon, residents are being encouraged to use the free and confidential DrinkCoach Alcohol Test to better understand their drinking patterns and consider whether making changes could benefit their health.

The online tool allows people to reflect on their alcohol use, identify potential risks and explore possible next steps. Those who feel they would benefit from further support can access up to six free online coaching sessions with an experienced DrinkCoach.

Steve Brown, Director of Public Health and Communities, said: “Alcohol is often presented as the backdrop for celebrations, socialising or relaxing after a stressful day, which makes it difficult to step back and ask ourselves what role does alcohol really play in our life – and are we happy about that?

“We want to create space for more conversations about alcohol and encourage people to take a few minutes to check in with their drinking. For some people that might mean finding out more about their relationship with alcohol, cutting back a little, or getting some more support.”

In Somerset, the campaign is also being supported by Somerset Council and Somerset Drug & Alcohol Service (SDAS), with teams offering free, confidential advice and support to residents who may have concerns about their drinking.

Councillor Evie Potts-Jones, Somerset Council’s lead for SEND, Public Health and Qualities & Diversity, said: “Alcohol can play different roles in people’s lives, but understanding its impacts is essential.

“Alcohol Awareness Week is a chance to reflect on our drinking habits, support those who may be struggling and ensure people know where to find help if they need it.”

Joy Gamlin, Senior Operations Manager at SDAS, said alcohol can often be overlooked because it is so widely accepted in everyday life.

“When people think about substance use, they maybe don’t think about alcohol as it is so normalised; however, we are regularly approached by people who are seeking support for drinking and they come from all walks of life, it’s indiscriminate.

“In Somerset, we’re committed to supporting people to make healthier choices. Whether it’s a conversation with a colleague, a visit to an information stand, or reaching out to SDAS for advice, we want local people to know help is available and judgement-free.”

The campaign encourages people across the South West to take small steps that could make a positive difference - whether that means tracking drinking habits, cutting back, speaking to someone about concerns or simply finding out more.

Residents in Devon can access DrinkCoach resources and support options, while people living in Somerset can contact SDAS for free and confidential advice.

Communities are also being encouraged to share their experiences and activities throughout the week using #AlcoholAwarenessWeek.

A new Minor Injuries Service has opened at Seaton and Colyton Medical Practice, offering residents across Seaton and surrounding Devon villages faster access to treatment for recent, non-life-threatening injuries.

The service is available to all local residents, including those who are not registered with the practice, and is designed to provide a more convenient option for urgent but minor injuries within the community.

It will treat injuries sustained within the past 48 hours and is not intended for illnesses, long-term conditions, or routine medical concerns, which should continue to be managed through standard GP services or other healthcare routes.

As the facility does not include X-ray equipment, patients with suspected fractures or more serious injuries are being advised to attend Minor Injury Units in Honiton or, where appropriate, emergency services in Exeter.

The service operates during normal weekday practice hours and is not available at weekends or on Bank Holidays. Patients are encouraged to telephone ahead where possible, as it will run alongside existing GP appointments and clinical duties carried out by GPs, an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. As a result, some waiting times may occur.

The introduction of the service follows a three-year effort by Seaton and Colyton Medical Practice to improve access to urgent care locally. Progress was initially delayed due to a lack of suitable space within the building, but approval was eventually secured following discussions with the Integrated Care Board (ICB) to deliver the service from the practice premises.

To make the project possible, back-office space was converted into a clinical treatment room, supported by additional funding and grants linked to the practice’s role in medical training.

Local businesses also played a key role in supporting the development. Howdens Joinery supplied kitchen units and materials at no cost to create a fully equipped clinical preparation and storage area, while Clinch Plumbing, JKS Flooring, Hancock Construction, and Inside Out contributed time, services, and discounted work.

A spokesperson for Seaton and Colyton Medical Practice said they were “delighted” to launch the service, describing it as “a valuable step forward in improving access to urgent care” for residents across Seaton and the wider Devon area.

A prolific shoplifter who targeted supermarkets and retailers across South Devon and Exeter has been jailed after admitting 22 theft offences committed over a three-month period.

Ben Dennis Williams, 23, of Chestnut Avenue, Exeter, appeared before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on 23rd June, where he pleaded guilty to 22 counts of shop theft. He was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment.

The offences took place between 26th March and 17th June and involved a number of well-known retailers, including Co-op stores in Dawlish and Teignmouth, Tesco in Torquay and Newton Abbot, Costcutter in Dawlish, Sainsbury’s in Newton Abbot, and John Lewis and TK Maxx in Exeter.

Items stolen included bottles of wine, meat, coffee, laundry products, baby clothes, energy drinks, cosmetics and chocolate, with the total value of the thefts exceeding £1,500.

Seventeen of the offences were committed at Co-op stores in Dawlish and Teignmouth. Police say the successful prosecution was made possible through close partnership working between officers and local retailers, who shared CCTV footage, witness statements and intelligence to build a comprehensive case.

PC Ange Comber, from the South Devon Crime Management Investigation Team, said: “This was a sustained period of offending which had a real impact on a number of businesses and their staff. By working closely with retailers and gathering evidence across multiple locations, we were able to demonstrate the full extent of Williams’ offending to the court.

“I hope this outcome reassures businesses that we take shop theft seriously and will pursue offenders through the courts.”

Business and Crime Prevention Sergeant Chris Chaloner said the case demonstrated the value of businesses working together to tackle repeat offenders.

“By sharing information, evidence and intelligence collectively, we are able to identify patterns of offending more quickly and take robust action against repeat offenders,” he said.

He added that partnership working not only supports investigations but also helps prevent crime, protects shop staff and strengthens local businesses.

The investigation was supported by the Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Business Crime Reduction Partnership, operated by UK Partners Against Crime (UKPAC). Participating businesses used a dedicated reporting platform to submit CCTV footage and evidence directly to police, helping officers link offences committed across different locations.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez said the case showed how effective collaboration between retailers and police can be in tackling shoplifting.

“Retail crime is not just a business issue – it impacts the whole community and undermines the vibrancy of our town and city centres,” she said.

Devon & Cornwall Police are urging retailers affected by shoplifting or antisocial behaviour to report incidents and to work with local business crime reduction partnerships to help identify repeat offenders and bring them before the courts.

More than one million children and young people in England were referred to NHS mental health services last year, with suspected autism and anxiety among the biggest drivers behind the rising demand, according to a major new report.

Analysis of NHS England data by the Children’s Commissioner for England shows that 1,048,965 children had active referrals to Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services (CYPMHS) during the 12 months to March 2025 – equivalent to around one in every 10 children.

The figure represents a 9.5 per cent increase in just one year and is almost double the 563,639 referrals recorded in 2018-19, highlighting the growing pressure on children’s mental health services across the country.

In her annual report, Dame Rachel de Souza said she was “in no doubt that we are facing a crisis” in young people’s mental health.

She added: “These are not just numbers, but children whose lives have been put on hold for months and, in some cases, years waiting for support they urgently need.”

The report found that more than one in three children referred were still waiting to begin treatment. More than 60,000 had been waiting for over two years – around 15,000 more than the previous year – while the average waiting time for support was 128 days.

Anxiety was the most common reason for referral, accounting for 16 per cent of all cases. However, the sharpest increase was seen in suspected autism, with referrals rising by 47 per cent in a single year to more than 96,000. Referrals for other neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and Tourette’s syndrome, increased by nearly a quarter.

Despite the rising number of referrals, fewer than one in five children with suspected autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions went on to receive support during 2024-25. Those who did typically waited around a year before receiving help.

The report also highlights inequalities in access to mental health services. Children living in the most deprived parts of England accounted for 15 per cent of referrals, compared with 7.6 per cent from the least deprived areas. Black and Asian children were also found to be underrepresented in referrals and were more likely to reach services only when experiencing severe distress or crisis.

Dame Rachel said the NHS data “clearly demonstrates the sheer scale of distress young people are facing today”.

She continued: “While there have been some encouraging signs, with more children receiving support last year, it is hard to ignore the colossal challenge facing mental health services, as demand outpaces system capacity and funding.”

Although real-term spending on children’s mental health services increased to £1.1 billion in 2024-25, the report notes that funding has not kept pace with demand. Spending rose by around two per cent, while referrals increased by almost 10 per cent over the same period.

Dame Rachel also called for “greater focus on joined-up services across health, education and social care to ensure children are getting the help they need in schools and the community”. She has also recommended that the Government develops a strategy to address the causes of poor mental health and wellbeing, alongside reforms to England’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system.

The findings are likely to resonate with many modern families, where schools, GPs and support services continue to report growing demand for help with anxiety, autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

While awareness and diagnosis have improved in recent years, the report suggests that access to timely support has not kept pace with growing demand, leaving many children and families facing lengthy waits for assessment and treatment.

An Axminster engineering company is investing in the future of British manufacturing with the launch of its first-ever graduate programme aimed at tackling the industry’s growing skills shortage.

Air Control Industries (ACI), based on the Millwey Rise Industrial Estate, has announced a new two-year Engineering Graduate Programme designed to give aspiring engineers practical experience while helping the company develop the next generation of talent.

The initiative marks another milestone for the business, which became employee-owned in 2023 after more than 50 years as a family-run company. Today it is led by Managing Director Lucy Cockerill, the daughter of the former owner, as part of a leadership team focused on innovation, sustainability and investing in the local community.

The graduate programme will welcome one or two new recruits each year, with participants gaining hands-on experience across the company’s operations, manufacturing, quality, innovation, design and commercial departments. Rather than observing from the sidelines, graduates will work on real engineering projects supporting customers around the world from the company’s Axminster headquarters.

Founded in 1969, Air Control Industries designs and manufactures industrial air solutions, including fans, blowers and specialist air knife systems used to improve efficiency, safety and productivity across a range of industries. The business also operates the JetBlack Safety and Hyroic brands, supplying specialist safety and drying technology to customers worldwide.

Mat Ayres, Innovation and Engineering Manager at ACI, said the scheme reflects the company’s long-term commitment to developing engineering talent.

“The Engineering Graduate Programme is part of a broader strategy to address the ongoing skills gap in engineering and manufacturing, while reinforcing our roots in the local community.

“It is about investing in people and in the future of engineering. As an employee-owned business, we’re committed to creating opportunities for individuals who are curious, capable and ready to make an impact.”

He added that the company hopes graduates will not only learn from experienced engineers but also bring fresh ideas that will help drive future innovation.

Successful applicants will begin the programme in September at Air Control Industries’ headquarters on Weycroft Avenue, with the company hoping the initiative will encourage more young people to consider engineering careers while helping to strengthen East Devon’s skilled manufacturing workforce.

A driver had to be freed from a vehicle after a high-speed collision with a tree forced the closure of a major road linking East Devon and Somerset.

Emergency services were called to the A358 at Tytherleigh, near Axminster, at around 9.35am on Sunday, 21st June, following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said two passengers had managed to get out of the car before crews arrived.

The driver, however, remained trapped inside and was freed by firefighters before being treated by ambulance personnel.

The incident led to the closure of the A358 between Axminster and Chard while emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the crash and recovery work was carried out.

Devon Highways confirmed the road remained closed until approximately 6.45pm, with diversion routes in place throughout the day.

No details have been released about the driver’s condition or the extent of any injuries sustained in the collision.

The closure caused significant disruption for motorists travelling between East Devon and South Somerset during the Summer Solstice, with drivers being diverted for much of the day while emergency crews worked at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the crash have not been disclosed and enquiries into the incident are continuing. Police are appealing for anyone with further information to come forward.

Across Britain, interest in witchcraft and modern Pagan spirituality has become increasingly visible. Once relegated to folklore, Halloween imagery and historical myth, it now sits within a broader, more complex religious landscape in which traditional Christianity coexists with a growing range of alternative spiritual expressions.

While the trend is evident nationally, it is particularly noticeable in parts of Britain with a strong Celtic heritage, where landscape, folklore and a deep sense of place continue to shape cultural identity. In such areas, nature-based spirituality has become increasingly visible within wellbeing culture, online communities and public discussions about faith. What was once regarded as a fringe interest now enjoys a degree of cultural legitimacy that would have seemed unlikely a generation ago.

Modern witchcraft is not a single organised belief system. It ranges from structured Pagan religions such as Wicca to highly individual, informal practices often described as eclectic or “green” witchcraft. Wicca itself emerged in Britain during the twentieth century and draws upon ritual practice, seasonal symbolism and reconstructed elements of pre-Christian tradition. Alongside it sit more fluid forms of spirituality that emphasise personal ritual, herbal knowledge, meditation and symbolic engagement with nature.

For most practitioners, these traditions are not experienced as theatrical or superficial. They are understood as sincere forms of spirituality, often framed less in terms of supernatural claims and more as ways of cultivating meaning, mindfulness and connection to the natural world. This distinction is important, particularly given the way witchcraft is frequently represented in popular culture.

The reasons behind the increased visibility of such practices are closely linked to wider shifts in British religious identity. Church attendance has declined over several decades, while the proportion of people identifying as having no religion has risen significantly. Yet the decline of organised religion has not necessarily extinguished spiritual curiosity. Instead, many people appear to be searching for meaning outside traditional institutions.

For some, witchcraft and Pagan practice offer a sense of autonomy. There is no requirement for formal membership, clerical authority or adherence to a fixed creed. Spiritual practice is shaped by personal experience, reflection and engagement with nature and seasonal cycles. This flexibility appeals in a culture that increasingly values individual choice and self-expression.

The emphasis on nature is particularly significant. Much modern Pagan and witchcraft practice is closely tied to the changing seasons, environmental awareness and the symbolism of landscape. In a society increasingly dominated by screens, schedules and urban living, many people find themselves drawn to spiritualities that encourage a renewed attentiveness to the rhythms of the natural world.

One of the clearest examples of this can be seen each year at the Summer Solstice. Thousands gather before dawn at Stonehenge to witness the sunrise on the longest day of the year. Among them are Pagans, Druids, Wiccans, New Age spiritual seekers, tourists and the simply curious. What was once a relatively niche observance has become a significant cultural event, attracting widespread media coverage and growing public interest.

For committed Pagans and Wiccan practitioners, the Summer Solstice occupies an important place within the ritual calendar, marking the height of the sun’s power and celebrating the cycles of nature. Yet many who attend would not describe themselves as followers of any particular spiritual path. Rather, they are drawn by a desire for connection, community and participation in something that feels older and larger than themselves.

The popularity of such gatherings raises an important question. Is this growing fascination with solstice celebrations and nature spirituality a genuine threat to Christianity?

The answer is probably more complex than either critics or enthusiasts would like to admit.

Numerically, modern Paganism remains a small minority faith in Britain. The vast majority of those attending events such as the Summer Solstice are not dedicated practitioners of Wicca or Pagan religion. Many are visitors, day-trippers or people attracted by the atmosphere and symbolism rather than any deeply held theological conviction.

Yet it would be mistaken for Christians to dismiss the phenomenon as little more than a colourful gathering or an excuse for a midsummer party. The crowds assembling at Stonehenge each June point towards something deeper within British society. They reveal a continuing appetite for ritual, transcendence and communal experiences of the sacred.

In many respects, the success of modern Pagan spirituality tells us less about Paganism itself than about the spiritual condition of contemporary Britain. The longing that draws people to ancient monuments, seasonal festivals and nature-based rituals is often the same longing that has historically drawn people towards religion more generally: the search for meaning, belonging and a sense of connection with something beyond the self.

This is where the challenge for the Church becomes particularly significant.

Many people continue to hunger for wonder and transcendence, but increasingly seek them outside traditional Christian structures. Some perceive the Church as distant, institutional or disconnected from everyday experience. Others struggle to see how ancient doctrines relate to modern concerns about identity, wellbeing, community and the environment.

The rise of alternative spirituality therefore raises uncomfortable but necessary questions. Have churches become less effective at communicating the beauty and mystery of the Christian faith? Have they underestimated the human need for ritual, symbolism and sacred space? Have they failed to articulate a compelling Christian vision of creation at a time when environmental concern is becoming central to public life?

Historically, Christianity has never lacked resources to answer these questions. The biblical narrative begins in a garden and ends with the renewal of creation. The Christian tradition contains rich understandings of stewardship, pilgrimage, contemplation and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Throughout history, believers have encountered God not only in churches and cathedrals but also in deserts, forests, mountains and remote places of prayer.

The challenge may therefore be less about competing with Paganism and more about recovering confidence in Christianity’s own spiritual inheritance.

What is emerging across Britain is not a wholesale return to pre-Christian religion. Nor is it evidence that large numbers of people are abandoning Christianity in favour of Wicca or Paganism. The reality is both less dramatic and more revealing.

The growing visibility of witchcraft, solstice celebrations and nature-based spirituality suggests that, despite decades of secularisation, the desire for transcendence remains remarkably resilient. People continue to seek ritual, meaning, community and a sense of connection with something larger than themselves. The decline of traditional religious observance has not extinguished those impulses; it has simply changed the ways in which they are expressed.

For Christians, the most important observation may not be why some people are drawn to Pagan spirituality at all, but why so many are searching elsewhere for experiences of wonder, belonging and the sacred. The crowds gathering at Stonehenge before sunrise each June are unlikely to herald a Pagan revival. They do, however, offer a reminder that Britain remains a nation in spiritual search. How the Church responds to that search may prove far more significant than the growth of witchcraft itself.
